Tamping Rammer vs Plate Compactor: Which One Do You Need?
Both machines compact soil, but they are built for different jobs.
Tamping rammer
A rammer delivers a high-impact, concentrated blow through a narrow shoe (about 275×330 mm). That makes it ideal for trench backfill, utility bedding and cohesive soils where a plate would simply bounce.
Plate compactor
A plate compactor applies a vibrating, distributed force across a wider plate. It is the right tool for granular fill, paving base, asphalt patching and larger open areas.
Practical advice
Most contractors running road or utility work keep both: a rammer for the trench and a plate compactor for the shoulder and reinstatement.
