How to Choose the Right Plate Compactor

Choosing a plate compactor comes down to four factors: centrifugal force, plate size, engine type and working width.

1. Centrifugal force

For granular soil and paving base, 10–15 kN is the common range. Heavier units deliver faster results but are harder to manoeuvre in confined spaces.

2. Plate size

A 550×370 mm plate is the standard for trench and patch work. For larger areas, a 600×420 mm plate covers more ground per pass.

3. Engine type

Gasoline engines are lighter and easier to start. Diesel engines offer lower running cost and longer service intervals.

4. Water tank

If you compact asphalt, a water tank keeps the plate clean and prevents bitumen pick-up.
